The legacy of the Knights Templar lives on in the stones of Tomar and in the silence surrounding Almourol. This tour invites you to explore one of the most fascinating chapters of Portuguese history, where faith, military strategy and mystery intertwine.
The Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the headquarters of the Templar Order in Portugal. Its iconic Charola, inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, reflects the deep spiritual mission of the knights. The surrounding cloisters, chapels and Manueline details reveal the blend of power and symbolism that defined this order.
In Tomar, the Church of Santa Maria do Olival, once the pantheon of Templar masters, offers further insight into the depth of this heritage. The Church of Saint John the Baptist, located in the main square, frames the story of a city shaped by devotion and resilience.
At the Castle of Almourol, the setting changes to one of pure medieval atmosphere. Perched on an island in the middle of the Tagus River, this fortress represents the early frontier of the Christian kingdom and the strategic vision of the Templars.
